Day 106. No 1234s? ?

Today I finally haven’t been practicing 1234s 😀 I focused on scales instead, trying to play them more consistently. Also I’ve returned to CAGED practice.

I practiced scales for a longer periods of time in order to work more on the precision. Hopefully this approach will get me to the desirable result sooner.

Week 15. Summary

This week was kinda relaxed due to the holidays, so the main achievement is that I finally get through all the 1234 combinations and will now leave this exercise for a while 🙂

Also, one of the main things this week was to use that technique Brandon told me to use – holding the pinky on the guitar body under the strings. I’m not completely used to it and there are some questions on it in today’s video.

Anyway, have a great week everyone!

The goals for this week were:

  • [Done] 4123, 4132, 4213, 4231, 4312, 4321 as 8th notes at 150 bpm across the neck
  • [Done] Practice ear training at tonedear.com daily
  • [Done] Kids by MGMT solo at 160 bpm consistently
  • CAGED shapes for each kind of chords in less than 1:20

My goals for the next week:

  • Scales as 16th notes at 90 bpm consistently
  • Kids by MGMT solo at 170 bpm consistently
  • CAGED shapes for each kind of chords in less than 1:20

Today I felt a bit better and decided to finally return to the normal routines instead of playing just 1234s.

Week 14. Summary

This week I started to learn and apply CAGED system. It’s really cool how many voicings of the same chords exist. I’ve been playing C A G E D chords in every position with every shape and doing it for Major, Minor, Major 7th, 7th, Minor 7th chords. In the PDFs and the lesson itself there were no 7th chords shapes for CAGED system. Is there any reason for that? Anyway I figured them out myself and have been playing them as part of this routine as well.

Above that the common routines continued. 1234s are preserved as always and I’m getting closer to my ultimate goal: next week I’ll play the 4*** combinations as 8th notes at 150 bpm across the fretboard and it will conclude my long journey of playing each of 24 combinations that way. I have some ideas how to improve this exercise even more after that, but I’ll tell about it the next week.

I’ve been practicing scales as well, but I’m not better at playing them at all, so next week I’ll decrease the speed and try to increase it bpm by bpm. This leap of 10 bpm at once (or 5 bpm if we’re talking about 16th notes) seems to be crucial and too hard, so I need a step back. No scales videos in the summary this time 🙂

Merry Christmas everyone and a Happy New Year!

The goals for this week were:

  • [Done] 4231, 4312, 4321 as 8th notes at 150 bpm on the 5th fret
  • Practice ear training at tonedear.com daily
  • Kids by MGMT solo at 170 bpm consistently
  • [Done] Implement Modules 19-20 routines

My goals for the next week:

  • 4123, 4132, 4213, 4231, 4312, 4321 as 8th notes at 150 bpm across the neck

Day 98. Applying new technique

It’s the first time ever I’ve got to the level with 9 intervals. My ear is getting better, and that’s a fact. Unfortunately, I failed my weekly goal to practice every day, but the results are getting better and better, which is marvelous. My best result ever!

Songs

MGMT – Kids [Solo]

8th notes @ 140-145 bpm. I’ve decided to work more on consistency so the idea was to play the whole solo again and again at the given speed until it sounds good for a few times in a row. The speed I got to is not that impressive – 145 bpm. But I think that this approach is what will lead me to the finite goal of playing the solo at the original speed.

I’m not sure what to write here, so this section will be optional since tomorrow.

Ear training

I was on an almost perfect streak for the first 100 questions with only 5-6 mistakes. But as soon as Minor 3rd appeared all went south… Also I mixed up some buttons and increased the number of mistakes for Perfect 4th for instance. Need to be more focused to exclude things like this.

Songs

MGMT – Kids [Solo]

Today I made a breakthrough. The hardest bar for me was the second one and I thought that it was because of the bar itself. But it appeared that I just hadn’t used alternate picking for the whole bar and had to pick up or down multiple times in a row, which on the higher speeds is pretty much impossible. So I slowed down once again and trained myself to play everything correctly. This bar appeared quite easy so the progress will definitely follow 🙂

Summary

There was a long practice. Nearly 1.5 hours if I’m correct. And it was really fun. Although the next parts of the solo became worse, I’m still really happy with the 2nd bar. There are no more reasons for me to stop increasing the speed, and I’m looking forward to it.
