Week 19. Summary

I have a plane in 10 hours, so this summary will be short πŸ™‚

The goals I set myself this week were quite over reasonable, so in order to reach them I had to increase the speed by 10 bpm daily while playing as 8th notes. So it was pretty tough and the result at final speed is not very clean. But I managed to film some pretty decent attempts on camera, so the goals are now complete.

I won’t have any guitar on a vacation so I’ll continue ear training and start practicing 6 levels of rhythm from the Module 22. I really hope that the Internet will be there and I’ll be able to post something for the next week. Don’t wanna fail the challenge because of this vacation.

Anyway, here’s the short video with this week results.

The goals for this week were:

  • [Done] Mixolydian scales as 16th notes at 90 bpm
  • [Done] Major scales (A string) as 16th notes at 90 bpm
  • [Done] Major scales in 3rds as 16th notes at 75 bpm

  • [Done] Minor pentatonic scales in 3rds as 16th notes at 75 bpm
  • [Done] Minor pentatonic scales in 4 note pattern as 16th notes at 75 bpm

My goals for the next week:

Week 18. Summary

This week was all about scales and ways of practicing them. There’s not much to say, I’ll better just show the results.

Ear training is much better, I’m not struggling with Minor 3rds anymore, now the issue is with 6ths, 7ths and 9ths. Need to come up with some examples I’m used to, because I’m not familiar with the PDF ones.

The next week I’ll work on dexterity for these scales and patterns. It might be quite confusing in the beginning but hopefully I’ll manage to fulfill my goals.

Anyway, here’s the video.

Week 17. Summary

Hello there! Another week has passed. I finally finished Module 19 routines, which is great, and watched Modules 20-21. Whew, there’ll be a lot of scales next week ?

Anyway, briefly on all the goals for this week:

CAGED system shapes are MUCH more comfortable to play now, I’m switching all of them without any struggle. The only one that is not doing well is Gm7 shape as an open chord. But as I understood there’s nothing in the world that would force anyone to play this voicing instead of barre shape on the 3rd fret. So I’m not worried about it.

All of Me and Autumn Leaves were fun to play in the different keys. This time I’ve been playing them on the acoustic to add some challenge. And yep, these chords are quite easy for me to play now.

Kids solo was at the same time pretty decent and not great this week. At the very first day of the week I managed to play it not at 175 bpm but at 180 bpm as well pretty clean. But then I just couldn’t repeat that even once. So I decided to finally drop it and come up with something else instead. In the video there is a solo which I composed over the original chord progression. I’m note sure if all the notes are correct, but I think there are no dissonant ones. Correct me if I’m wrong ?

I’m excited to start practicing something new. These scales in 3rds or in 4 note pattern look pretty tricky to play, and I’m really looking forward to try playing them.

See you next week, guitar chefs!

The goals for this week were:

  • [Done] CAGED shapes at 60 bpm with clean sound

Week 16. Summary

So, where should I start… What a crazy week! I decided to count how much time I’ve spent practicing and the result for this week is really mind blowing – 7 h 48 min ?

It’s a great pace and hopefully I’ll be able to maintain this excitement and desire to practice in the future. I’m still not done with the Module 19 routines though, which is even more surprising. Maybe I’m overdoing these exercises, by I want to play everything I need to decent before proceeding further.

Anyway, the scales are not much better, but still better, I think. Almost the whole week I sucked at them at this speed but suddenly today I’ve just felt that it’s the day for some dexterity and managed to record some decent attempts.

The CAGED goal transformed the very first day. I started using the metronome to control how fast can I make chord transitions. I’ve started with major chords at 60 bpm and then been adding other types of chords every day. So the goal became to play all of them for C, A, G, E, D chords at 60 bpm. Unfortunately I got to Minor 7th chords just today so I switched them every other beat instead of every one. But I’ll fix this the next week.

At the beginning of the week I was really upset about my Kids solo progress. I couldn’t beat the 160 bpm wall no matter how hard I tried. So I dropped this routine and told my friend that we’re gonna improvise in this part instead or play something else. But today I felt that I could give it a second chance and managed to play in at 165 bpm quite easily. Then I switched to 170 bpm and there were quite a few successful attempt so I’ll count it as an achieved goal and will continue to increase the speed in the following weeks.

Also I returned to 1234 combination and use it as a warm-up before anything else.

Next week I really want to finish Module 19 routines and finally proceed to the next module. The fun stuff is awaiting me in the following modules so I really want to get there as soon as possible. I really haven’t played almost anything but the routines to prioritize the course, but this module appeared to be quite heavy on exercises ?

The goals for this week were:

  • [Done] Scales as 16th notes at 90 bpm consistently
  • [Done] Kids by MGMT solo at 170 bpm consistently
  • [Done] CAGED shapes for each kind of chords in less than 1:20

My goals for the next week:

Week 15. Summary

This week was kinda relaxed due to the holidays, so the main achievement is that I finally get through all the 1234 combinations and will now leave this exercise for a while πŸ™‚

Also, one of the main things this week was to use that technique Brandon told me to use – holding the pinky on the guitar body under the strings. I’m not completely used to it and there are some questions on it in today’s video.

Anyway, have a great week everyone!

The goals for this week were:

  • [Done] 4123, 4132, 4213, 4231, 4312, 4321 as 8th notes at 150 bpm across the neck

Week 14. Summary

This week I started to learn and apply CAGED system. It’s really cool how many voicings of the same chords exist. I’ve been playing C A G E D chords in every position with every shape and doing it for Major, Minor, Major 7th, 7th, Minor 7th chords. In the PDFs and the lesson itself there were no 7th chords shapes for CAGED system. Is there any reason for that? Anyway I figured them out myself and have been playing them as part of this routine as well.

Above that the common routines continued. 1234s are preserved as always and I’m getting closer to my ultimate goal: next week I’ll play the 4*** combinations as 8th notes at 150 bpm across the fretboard and it will conclude my long journey of playing each of 24 combinations that way. I have some ideas how to improve this exercise even more after that, but I’ll tell about it the next week.

I’ve been practicing scales as well, but I’m not better at playing them at all, so next week I’ll decrease the speed and try to increase it bpm by bpm. This leap of 10 bpm at once (or 5 bpm if we’re talking about 16th notes) seems to be crucial and too hard, so I need a step back. No scales videos in the summary this time πŸ™‚

Merry Christmas everyone and a Happy New Year!

Week 13. Summary

This week was kinda relaxed on practice. I mean, I still practiced daily, but All of Me and Autumn Leaves are not that hard and are fun to play. So to spice it up a bit I concentrated mostly on the Kids by MGMT solo.

Originally it’s played as 16th notes at 123 bpm. Last week I just learned the solo and played it as 8th notes at 123 bpm, recording every bar separately πŸ˜€ By the end of the week I managed to get to the speed of 8th notes at 160 bpm. It’s not consistent at all – I’ve been recording myself daily for 20-30 minutes and from that footage I only get 2-3 successful attempts. So I’m gonna change the approach and practice each part separately, increasing the speed. Then I’m gonna connect them all. Hopefully, this will help me progress faster.

Anyway, here’s the video. There are no questions this week, and also I tried to organize it differently for it to be shorter πŸ™‚

The goals for this week were:

  • [Done] 4123, 4132, 4213 as 8th notes at 150 bpm on the 5th fret
  • [Done] Get to the level with 7 intervals on ear training at tonedear.com 3 times
  • [Done] All of Me consistently at 150 bpm (both open and barre chords versions)

Week 12. Summary

This week was quite successful. I got another six combinations of 1234 to the point of playing them as 8th notes at 150 bpm across the neck, increased my endurance in strumming with barre chords and substitutes, learned and played All of Me, watched Module 18 and started learning the solo of Kids by MGMT in order to make a cover of it with my friend.

So here is the video.

The goals for this week were:

  • [Done] 3124, 3142, 3214, 3241, 3412, 3421 as 8th notes at 150 bpm across the neck

Week 10. Summary

Black Friday got me busy for almost 3 full days. So I’ve still been practicing daily but the amount of time and willing to do it was not the best. So I sticked to the same routines I did last week in order to increase their consistency and get the better sound.

All went as usual – three more 1234 combinations are now played as 8th notes at 150 bpm, I practiced scales dexterity and a bit of note pronunciation, also kept trying to play the barre chord progression for longer period of time without the left hand fatigue. Also I’ve been practicing ear training almost every day in the bed before sleep.

I succeeded in almost every goal, which is great, but haven’t managed to proceed further through course. So that’s what I’ll focus at the next week – Module 16 and chord construction routines.

As always, here’s the video. I think I’m getting better at editing and it takes me less time to edit these summaries. So as long as I have at least some time I’ll try to keep them like this.

The goals for this week were:

  • [Done] 3124, 3142, 3214 as 8th notes at 150 bpm on the 5th fret
  • [Done] Scales pronouncing notes using the random scale machine [under 5 min per string]
  • [Done] Consistently get to the level with 7 intervals on ear training at tonedear.com [4 of 6 times]
  • Implement Modules 15-16 routines

My goals for the next week:

  • 3241, 3412, 3421 as 8th notes at 150 bpm on the 5th fret
  • Get to the level with 8 intervals on ear training at tonedear.com 3 times
  • Implement Modules 15-16 routines
  • Implement left hand fingers movement reducing routine
